A crinoid star fossil is the star-shaped stem segment (or ossicle) of an ancient marine animal called a crinoid, or "sea lily". These fossils are highly collectible because they are often found as a distinctive, patterned "star" in ancient marine rock, and can be seen as a type of ancient echinoderm, closely related to starfish and sea urchins.
